What is Psychotherapy?

In general, psychotherapy is an opportunity for you to receive focused care for your mental health needs. I will work with you in the session to develop goals, gain insight, build skills, and improve. Many people from all walks of life attend psychotherapy for different reasons. For some, it’s a way to help them get unstuck and on their way. For others, it’s about diving deeper into unhelpful relationship patterns and negative thinking. Whichever you choose, therapy can help untangle the knots that arise in life.

Am I the right therapist for you?

I approach mental health care from a decolonial and liberation psychology approach. This means that my work acknowledges the impact of colonization, systemic oppression, capitalism, white-body supremacy, and state-sanctioned violence on our mental health. My work extends beyond understanding yourself from an individualized approach but also integrates community care, cultural traditions, our lived experience, and ancestral knowledge.

I work to help adults better understand themselves and their relationship with others, their spirit, and their emotions. My focus is working with women of color who are immigrants or children of immigrants. This can include reclaiming identities and culture lost due to colonization and assimilation. My work as your therapist is to support you in your path of unlearning ways in which you ignored your true self and relearning new ways to embrace yourself fully.

Frequently asked questions

Psychotherapy is the treatment of a person who is struggling emotionally through psychological means. Psychotherapy with me will look like a partnership or collaboration in which we develop your treatment goals and work on achieving those goals. In therapy, goals are not only focused on symptoms but on regaining or building a life that is satisfying and worthwhile. My therapy modality is specialized and integrative to meet the person where they are. The therapeutic modalities that I use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Humanistic Therapy. I am happy to discuss this further during the consultation call.

Therapy will be provided online via a secure video conferencing system (similar to FaceTime or Zoom). Sessions will not be in person at this practice is solely an online practice.
The first session of therapy is a “getting to know you” session where you will share why you have decided to start treatment, and you can ask me questions about my practice. Additional questions and paperwork are reviewed in the first session, including background information and limits to confidentiality.

No, a Mental Health diagnosis is not required to receive mental health care. There are many reasons that people attend therapy that has nothing to do with having a diagnosis, such as getting a divorce, the loss of a loved one, and adjusting to a new city. Typically, a diagnosis is required if a therapist is accepting insurance, in which case, the insurance company requires a diagnosis to justify treatment.

I accept insurance for clients in New York and Illinois.

No, the common misconception of therapy is that you will be sitting on the couch while I dive deep into your past. This is not the case. Depending on your needs and goals in therapy, the format will change accordingly. I am focused on meeting you where you’re at and getting you on your way.
For some, we will need to discuss your past; however, my goal is to help you heal and move forward.
